Meet the Sommelier

Christian Borel has been drinking wine with his first oenology instructor for most of his life, his mom Celeste. His young palate was first introduced to “wine water,” a mixture of wine, sugar, and water served at family dinners and later graduated to Champagne, most often enjoyed during days spent at the beach. Throughout the years, he sampled some of the finest Chateau wines in the world. Being raised in such a way refined his palate at a young age, and he continues to expand his taste and knowledge for the finest wines. He has tasted and knows everything from La Tache to Chateau Rothschilds, to Screaming Eagle, to Harlan. Since joining us at the inn, his love for wine has only grown with a deeper love for the stories, tastes, and the overall experience wine offers everyone. His passion for wine fueled his dedication to furthering his education, and has officially become a certified Sommelier.

Recently, Christian has traveled all over France, Argentina, and Chile on a wine tasting tour. In France alone, he tasted over 400 wines in 10 days across all the major regions. He loves to bring his love for wine to our guests and even more than his wine knowledge and pours, he loves to share his appreciation for wine with our guests, and allow them to experience the world with each sip.

Wine Selections for the Novice & the Connoisseur

The most affordable wines on the list come from the Loire Valley or France, with Muscadet, Sevre et Maine, Domaine de L’Ecu, “Granite” 2015, and some nice selections from Provence and the Rhone, selling on list for around $38-$45. Most notably, Ventoux, Alain Jaume & Fils, “Les Gelinottes” 2015, Moulin A Vent, and some inexpensive Beaujolais are offered for less than $50 a bottle.

Some of the most expensive bottles on list include Chateau Haut Brion and a 1982 Pessac-Leognan (vintage of the century) for $4,500 a bottle, a 1960 Jeroboam and 1st growth Chateau Mouton Rothschild for $8,000. Specialized bottles that you can’t find in a liquor store are found on our list, including the very rare Chateau Rayas 2005, Chateauneuf du Pape, La Tache 2016, Burgundy, and Australia’s Penfolds Grange, which is the Bordeaux-style “Rothschild of Australia.”

Of course, there are plenty of wines between those price ranges with over 1,100 bottles to select from our list.

Many of our wines have won the awards from esteemed publications like Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator. Notable award winners include: Plumpjack Cabernet, Diamond Creek Gravely Meadow, Dunn Howell Mountain, and Peter Michael” Les Pavots”  Knights Valley, 1999. Every bottle we sell has Christian’s seal of approval, so you’re guaranteed to find just the right bottle to suit your taste.

In addition to regular brunch and holiday events, we host several wine dinners throughout the year, constantly celebrating the best local and global varietals and the cuisine they complement.

Fall is a special time of year, especially for wine lovers to experience L’Auberge Provencale. For one, October is Virginia Wine Month and we’re having a “roaming” tasting event on the 24th in its honor. We will be serving canapés and pouring wines from a few of our favorite Virginia wineries, including Arterra, Fox Meadow, Glen Manor, and Walsh Family Winery. Enjoy a taste of Virginia with us!

The next wine dinner is November 21, 2019 celebrating the world premier of the Nouveau Beaujolais, a red wine made from Gamay grapes and produced in the Beaujolais region of France. It is the most popular vin de primeur, fermented for just a few weeks before being released for sale on the third Thursday of November, and is a fantastic excuse for us to have a party! We will also feature some Cru Beaujolais during this 5-course dinner, which is not as light as a Pinot Noir you might be accustomed to, and pairs well with meaty fish and stews. Many of these wines are especially delicious with holiday fare like a roasted turkey so you’ll surely get in the spirit should you attend.

One of the many perks of our passport loyalty program is geared towards our wine-loving visitors. If you purchase the L’Auberge Provencale Passport ($25), you get 20% off your first purchase at our wine store, featuring selections by Sommelier Christian Borel. Each time you purchase another bottle, you’ll get a stamp in your passport! After four stamps, you’ll receive another 20% discount.

Additionally, we are launching an off-premise wine club, which will feature monthly selections ranging from our high end cellar items to bottles that are more approachable in style and price point. We will have them on display in the sitting room, as well as in the hall behind the bar. Anticipate varietals from regions all over the globe, hand-selected by Christian.
