Upperville Horse Show – The Oldest in the Nation
Monday June 4, 2018-Sunday June 10, 2018
An iconic summertime event and part of the fabric of American Horse sport, the Upperville Horse show dates back to 1853. Before this horses were show at country and state fairs and livestock shows but there was no competitive horse events. Colonel Dulaney of Wellbourne started the show as a way to encourage better care of horses after he rescued a struggling colt.
This week long event has something for everybody. Kicking off on Monday June 4th, with the Hunter and now Jumper side with competitive class and competitions. On Tuesday the Middleburg Humane Foundations holds their meet and greet. Come meet some of the animals from this non profit shelter which provides a safe haven for abused, neglected and at risk animals, both large and small.
There is an Art under the Oaks, youth art program on Wednesday and the race against the clock by the Jumper Class with a display of raw power and speed as horses take on challenging jumps. On Thursday is the Upperville National Grand Prix, with it’s $30,000 purse. By the weekend you are treated to a Saturday for the whole family with signature classes, sidesaddle riders, colorful fox hunters and the timeless Family Class. The hunter class takes the center stage that day.
On Sunday, as a way of whimsical fun you can see the “Horses and Horsepower” feature to admire a different kind of horse power. There is row after row of gleaming entries in this event with cars of every era. Stop by the petting zoo with the kids to see the petting goats, chickens, sheep, a Zebu calf and more! And lets not forget the smallest and spunkiest of the competitors the Terrier races that afternoon.
It all is a preview to the $216,000 Upperviller Jumper Classic. This is where our equestrian Olympic riders come from. It is a beautiful spectacle of horsemanship and you won’t find anything like it anywhere else in the United States or perhaps the world. This premier event will sell out. So you might want to get your tickets now. Just 10 minutes from our luxury Virginia Wine Country Inn.
