Shenandoah Valley :: Spring Has Arrived in Provence

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Shenandoah Valley farm to table

Jessica our new gardener, planting our crops here at the inn with the cows watching over

The inn gardens in Shenandoah Valley are in full swing here at L’Auberge Provencale.  We are harvesting all our fresh herbs, lettuce, radishes, sorrel, chives and garlic from the garden already.  I can almost taste the fresh tomatoes that will be here soon.

Some bunnies have taken an interest in the garden as well.  I know they are everyone’s furry friends, but in this case they can be just a little pesky.  It is a good thing they are so very cute.

The orchard has been trimmed this year by a local orchard expert and the trees have not been hit by a frost.  It looks like it will be a good year for peaches, plums, pears, apples, cherries, apricots, nectarines and even paw paws.  The trees are loaded with fruit and are going to produce a mighty harvest this year.  We will keep Barbara busy making her famous jams, jellies, chutneys and infused oils and vinegar.

We are also getting fresh morels, fiddle head ferns and local asparagus.  This time of year is the favorite of our chefs with the freshest and best available.  Chef Scott and Chef Garrett are making tasty morsels for our Spring menu and for our customers this is the best time of year to visit and dine with us at our farm to table restaurant La Table Provencale at our Shenandoah Valley Inn.

Art at the Mill near our Shenandoah Valley bed and breakfast

Art at the Mill Open Now Until May 13th

The first week in May, is a busy one in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, the Gold Cup Races at Great Meadows in the Plains Virginia and the beginning of the Art at the Mill Show in Millwood, Virginia. All of these events are just minutes from our Shenandoah Valley bed and breakfast. So come out this weekend; there is plenty to see and do, or just kick off your shoes in the backyard of the inn and enjoy the summer-like weather.

The firemen’s parade is this Friday to kick off the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester! If you haven’t attended this parade it has the most fire trucks of any Firemen’s parade in the country.

Our celebrities that will be out and about this year are Mario Lopez, of MTV’s America’s Dance Crew and author of Mario Lopez’s Knockout Fitness and the beautiful Jazz Dorset, daughter of legendary sports figure with the University of Pittsburgh and the Dallas Cowboys.

The circus is in town and the Grand Feature Parade on Saturday will be a “Salute to Our Troops” with our local Virginia Girl, “Wounded Warrior” Capt. Leslie Smith, as the Grand Marshall. There are parties, sports breakfasts, dances, dinners, 10K race, the carnival, circus and much more. It is a local event the whole family can enjoy! A small town event at it’s finest.

It is the 87th running of the Virginia Gold Cup and there are still some tickets for spaces left if you go to their website. This is a fun-filled day of steeplechase racing and tailgate picnics! The festive atmosphere and the thrill of the chase make this a must for any city folks. Bring a beautiful hat and let us pack you a picnic to take.

Every Spring and Fall, the Burwell Morgan Mill in the quaint village of Millwood, Virginia becomes an extraordinary art gallery. Over 300 judges artist display their pottery, sculpture, fine woodwork and all types of paintings. There is truly something for every taste and budget. This show runs through May 13 and is a must see for the art lover in this 18th century working mill. When the art show closes the mill resumes grinding of fresh flour for the year. You can stop in this summer and pick up fresh whole wheat, corn, blue corn, and general all purpose flours, just to name a few. Buying local comes to new heights.

So grab your gal and come out to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and enjoy all the countryside has to offer. And don’t forget Mother on the 13th of May, the plant sale at the Virginia State Arboretum, Bland Farm and brunch here at L’Auberge Provencale from 11:30-2:30 and Mother’s Day Dinner 2:30-7:00. Treat your mom to the best that is offered in the Valley at our Shenandoah Inn!

Video Sneak Peak!

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Northern Virginia Bed and BreakfastIt’s never a quiet day here at L’Auberge Provencale, there’s always another crazy project on the books! Our latest adventure (coming soon…) has been a year-long endeavor to design a video that captures the essence of our Virginia Bed and Breakfast and the full guest experience.

Shenandoah B&BProduced, directed and edited by Madame Borel, no expense was spared to portray the full vision. The shoot started in February and wrapped in June; the seasons were captured at their worst and best.

We started with food, food and more food. Shot from the garden to the dining room, Virginia B&Bthe film recreates the inner workings of the kitchen, the chefs and the talent that goes behind every plate and bedroom.

It doesn’t stop there! Celeste dragged the patient videographers all over the Shenandoah Valley to capture our guests’ favorite activities. From the shops in Middleburg, the Vineyards and Bed and Breakfast in Northern VirginiaWineries in Delaplane, the Old Mill in Millwood, views from Skyline Drive and even an impromptu flying lesson with Alain in his airplane We’ve got it all on film! Please enjoy a sneak peak of pictures from our shoot and stay tuned for the final production to be posted later this summer.

“Taste of Provence” Wine Experience

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

It was a beautiful day on June 26th – hot, humid and a chance of rain, typical of early summer days in the Shenandoah Valley. Thirty lucky guests joined us indoors at L’Auberge Provencale for a cool, leisurely lunch in our Sunny Peach Dining Room. The ambiance was reminiscent of all that is Southern France and the essence that is Provence.

Virginia Wine Country Inn | Bed and Breakfast in Virginia

The “Taste of Provence” wasn’t merely just another wine dinner – it was a Wine Experience.  Guests dined around round tables, adorned in crisp cream linens and fresh garden flowers picked that afternoon.  Rosemary bread and fresh baked French Baguettes were drenched in our house-infused Garlic and Herb Olive Oil. Our guests embarked on the traditions and customs hidden behind Provençale Cuisine; great conversation, food and wine!

The wines and food, paired perfectly with much thought and collaboration by L’Auberge Provençale’s Executive Chef, Jacob Jasinski, Madame Celeste Borel and Wine Consultant, Jason Bise of Country Vintner Distributors. Every taste was a delight to all the senses. In between the flights of fare, Jason Bise took time to educate the party on the riches behind each region we were visiting in our minds and palates. Highlights of the meal started with the Caramelized Onion Mushroom Tartlet next to a bed of Oysters in Sorrel, Caviar and Citrus. The second and third flights showed off Chef Jasinski’s talent for Duck Galantine, Petite Bouillabaisse, A Duet of Gazpacho, and not to overdo it, House Cured Duck Ham & Foie Gras Royale. Just when guests thought it couldn’t be topped, Chef Jasinski sent out Local Lamb Rack & Loin and Slow Cooked Culotte, which melted like butter in everyone’s mouth. The fifth and final flight ended the afternoon on a sweet note; showing off Citrus Crepes Suzette and Apricot Tart Tatin with cool serving of Nougat Ice Cream, a specialty of our Pastry Chef, Duane Copeland.

The company, food and wine told the perfect story of an afternoon dining delight in sun splashed hills of the Southern Region of Provence. We thank each of our guests who made the journey to Provence with us that Sunday afternoon in June. We look forward to our subsequent Wine Dinner next month.

Stay Tuned…

Our next Wine Dinner will be in August, 2011
